Clean Snow Recipe for Play

My girls love to play in the snow, but we haven't gotten any of the white stuff this year.  So, we have been satisfying our snow play itch by making our own snow.

This clean snow was really easy to make, and my girls loved it's icy-cold, silky texture!  I'd rule this is a favorite out of the snow play recipes we have tried. Are you ready to make your own?

Clean Snow Materials
Note:  We found three packs of white soap and cheese graters at the dollar store.

Method

We began by placing six white soap bars in the freezer.  We left them there overnight.  The next morning I asked Jewel and Rosie if they wanted to make their own snow.  Of course they said yes; they were so excited!

You will want to set this activity up in a large bin or container like this one.  Have kids grate the soap bars in the container, being mindful of tiny fingers.

Grating the soap bars is great for fine motor development, and the process will keep kids entertained for a while.  As they grate the soap the frozen soap specks will gather in the bin to form the most amazing sensory snow!

We couldn't keep our hands out of this stuff!

Rosie and Jewel had so much fun playing in the silky-soft, clean snow!

They loved the icy-cold texture of this snow and found all sorts of fun ways to play!  After a bit of time I brought out spray bottles of cold water.  This extended the fun and gave us a whole new sensory snow!

The girls loved spraying the water and mixing it into the snow.  As they mixed the water in the clean snow transformed!  The water made the snow even more silky and super mold-able

The girls loved this mold-able clean snow and delighted in building snowmen, making castles, and forming silky snowballs.  This snow truly had the most squishy-fun texture!

Once the soap is grated you can add iridescent glitter, snowflakes, and Wintry beads.  You can also add a few drops of peppermint extract, but the soap we bought already had a delightful, Wintry scent.

Extend the fun by adding these elements to play:
  • Buckets and shovels
  • Kitchen gadgets
  • Cars & trucks
  • Princess figurines
  • Snow paint- have kids paint the clean snow
Note:  Please closely supervise children while they are grating.  We talked about safety and keeping our hands away from the grates, and I also only let Rosie and Jewel grate with large pieces of soap.  Once they started to get small I would give them a new bar.  You can also do all the grating yourself if you are concerned.
