Sidewalk Sand Play Recipe

We bought a 25 pound bag of play sand from Home Depot for only $5 and have found so many fun ways to play with it this Summer.  Some of our favorites have been painting with puffy sand paint, playing with MAGIC sand, exploring with super stretchy sand slime, and the quicksand we made for some SUPER sensory play.  Today we found another FUN way to play with our sand.

Sidewalk sand combines two of our favorite ways to play in the Summer- sidewalk chalk and sand!

  • Corn starch
  • Water
  • Play sand
  • Yellow food coloring
  • Buckets and shovels
You really don't need to measure exact ingredients when mixing up play recipes like this one.  Part of the fun is in concocting the ingredients until you reach a consistency that you love.  Sidewalk play sand is essentially yellow sidewalk chalk paint with the added element of sand.  To make ours we mixed corn starch and sand in a large sand bucket.  You can add more or less sand to your recipe depending on how grainy you would like your sand.  Ours was roughly 60% corn starch and 40% play sand

After you mix the two dry ingredients add a few drops of yellow food coloring, and then slowly add water until you have the desired consistency.  Add more water for a runnier sand and less water for a more GOOP- like sand.

Once our sand was mixed I gave the girls a few buckets, shovels, and other sand toys.   They had a blast playing with their oozing sidewalk sand!
