Rain Painting

This past Winter we made paint using snow as one of the ingredients, and Rosie and Jewel loved it!  They loved painting with snow so much that I had been waiting for a warm Spring day so that we could revisit this activity, only this time making our paint from rain.

Materials
  • Containers or jars
  • Food coloring
  • Paper
  • Paint brushes

This activity was incredibly easy to set up and kept Rosie and Jewel busy all morning.  The first thing we had to do was set out containers to catch the rain as it fell.  We used baby food jars and those worked great. The girls added several drops of food coloring to each jar, and then we went to play in the rain while the jars filled.

They were really excited about the rain paint and checked on their jars often as they played.   Lucky for us it rained really hard on this particular day, so our jars filled pretty quickly.

Once the jars had a decent amount of rain in them it was time to paint!  The girls were so excited.  We carried our rain paints over to the pavement, laid down paper, and the girls got to painting.

Not only did we paint in the rain, but we painted with rain, which Rosie and Jewel thought was so cool.  Once the girls were done painting we took their artwork inside to dry, and then we displayed it on our art wall.  This was such a simple and fun way to play on a long, rainy day.

A Few Tips:  If you are concerned about staining you may want to use washable watercolors in place of food coloring when making your paint.  The food coloring does wash off of skin, but it takes a few hand washes.  If you are wanting to keep kids artwork I recommend using a thicker paper.  Card stock and watercolor paper both work great.  Since it was raining while the girls were painting the regular paper we used got really wet.  We were still able to keep our artwork though.
