One thing I love about this play clay is that it is made from edible ingredients, making it safe for kids of all ages.  The recipe only takes a minute to whip up, and kids can make it entirely on their own.  We wanted to make different varieties of clay, so we began by making plain clay and then added colors and scents.

No Cook Play Clay Recipe
  • 1 cup of flour
  • 3/8 cup of salt
  • 3/8 cup of very warm water
Method
  • Combine the ingredients in a bowl and mix well.  Once mixed knead the ingredients for 2-3 minutes, and then wash & dry your hands.  Knead the dough for a moment more.  If the dough is at all sticky just sprinkle a little flour on top and work it into the dough.  After a moment of kneading you will have the perfect play clay

Couldn't be easier, right?

My girls love this clay just like this!  You can store it in a zip-seal bag to use again and again, or you can keep kids creations by leaving them out to dry.  You can also add color and scent.

If you only want to make one type of colored or scented clay you can add the ingredients right into the bowl when you initially mix it up.  If you want to create a variety you will want to make the clay and then divide it into balls, one ball for each variety you want to make

We used Fall spices from our pantry to scent the clay: apple, pumpkin, clove, and cinnamon.  I also set out a bit of coffee grounds.  Both girls loved mixing the spices into their clay

They played with the clay like this for a bit before adding color.  We used washable watercolors to color our clay, but you can also use food coloring.

These clay varieties perfectly capture the essence of Fall.  One whiff and I am transported to an amazing Thanksgiving feast.  Speaking of Thanksgiving, this would be a great recipe to keep on hand for Thanksgiving day.  Kids can make and play with their clay while you are busy doing one of my least favorite things, cooking.
