While your little ones eagerly wait in anticipation for that first snow fall how about trying some snow play recipes?  This liquid snow was a huge hit with my girls and is a great way to spend a morning at home.

What I love about the snow recipes we have shared is that they allow kids to play with icy-cold snow while staying warm indoors.  I hate the cold, and play times like these allow me to stay warm while also appeasing the kids.

Liquid Snow Recipe
  • Frozen corn starch
  • Cold water
  • Iridescent glitter
  • Ice cubes
  • Optional additions- snowflakes, trucks, scoopers, polar animals, etc
Method
  • Start by freezing the corn starch.  When you take the starch from the freezer it will be ice cold but still a powder.  We used two boxes to fill a small sensory bin, but you can use more or less depending on how much snow you want to make.  Mix a few drops of peppermint extract into the starch if scent is desired

  • The frozen corn starch itself is great fun to play in.
  • Slowly add very cold water until the desired consistency is reached.  More water will give you a more liquid-like snow, and less water will give you a more goopy snow.  We always start with a little water and slowly add more as we play.  We also added ice cubes, iridescent glitter, trucks, a strainer, and snowflake cookie cutters

Rosie and Jewel had so much fun playing and exploring in the icy cold, melting snow

This melting snow is a wintry version of one of our favorite sensory materials.  It acts like a solid when hands are moving quickly and can be picked up and molded.  But once hands are still the snow will liquefy right in kids hands

Way too FUN!

The ice kept our liquid snow nice and cold while Rosie and Jewel played.  It also added a glorious sensory element to the activity.  Rosie and Jewel played and played-making oozing snowballs and melting snowflakes, plowing with their trucks, and by making it rain snow by filling a strainer with liquid snow.  They found so many other ways to play, too!

This play time took little effort to set up and cost next to nothing, and the kids loved it!  I think it's safe to say that this melting snow was a winning playtime!
