Supplies

• Play sand
• Fabric protector spray (like Scotchgard)
• Wax paper
• A bowl or container of water

How to Make Aqua Sand

Step 1: Prepare the Sand

Spread your sand out in small piles on wax paper.

Step 2: Spray the Sand

In a well-ventilated area, spray the sand until it is fully coated.

 

Step 3: Mix Thoroughly

Use a spoon or your hands to mix the coating evenly through the sand.

Step 4: Let It Dry

Allow the sand to dry completely (about 30–60 minutes).

Step 5: Add Water & Explore

Fill a clear container with water and pour the sand in.

The special coating creates a water-repellent (hydrophobic) barrier around each grain of sand. Instead of absorbing water, the sand pushes it away, allowing it to stay dry even beneath the surface.
