HOW TO MAKE GHOST ROCKETS FOR KIDS

Materials
Method
  • Begin by drawing ghost faces on clear film canisters.  We used a permanent marker to avoid smears during play.

  • Once the marker is dry add 1-3 spoons of corn starch to each film canister.
  • Then, fill the canisters roughly 1/3 of the way with warm water and stir until the corn starch is dissolved and the ingredients are combined.

Then, it is time to PLAY!

PLAYING WITH FLYING GHOST ROCKETS

You will want to set off one ghost rocket at a time.
  • Begin by taking a piece of Alka seltzer and breaking it into 2-3 pieces.
  • Then, quickly drop the pieces into the canister, put the lid on, flip the rocket over, set it down, and step back!

  • The ghost rocket will almost immediately go flying high into the air!

These ghosts really fly, too!  Just look at the force of science propelling them!

So FUN!  Rosie and Jewel loved making the ghosts fly and set off rocket after rocket!

Extend the Fun
Further explore science by adding varying amounts of ingredients.
  • What happens with more or less Alka seltzer?
  • What about more or less corn starch?
We had lots of fun experimenting, and I was surprised to discover that some of the ghosts flew the highest when less ingredients were used.
