Ever since we first shared a simple way to make your own treasure rocks we have made so many different types.  We have made magic rainbow rocks, shamROCKS, hatching dinosaur eggs, hatching alien eggs, and MAGIC treasure ice all using the same simple recipe.

In a bowl slowly add water to the desired amount of baking soda.  One cup of baking soda will yield roughly two treasure rocks.  Add more water until you reach the desired consistency

You want the mixture to be slightly moist and mold-able but not too wet.  If you accidentally add too much water just add more baking soda. We made ghost and pumpkin rocks.  To make the pumpkin treasure rocks we also added orange food coloring.  For the ghosts no color was needed.

Once you have the consistency right lay your cookie cutters out on a non stick surface and fill half way with the baking soda mixture.  You really want to pack the cookie cutters tightly

Then put your tricks, treats, or treasures in

Using thin tricks and treats works best. The jaw breakers were a bit bulky so I pushed them into the cookie cutter a bit to make sure they would be covered all the way on the top

Once the treasures are in place fill the cookie cutter the rest of the way with baking soda, packing tightly.  Carefully lift the cookie cutters and allow to dry for several hours

Repeat the above steps until you have made the desired amount of treasure rocks.  Once completely dry draw faces on your rocks if desired.  We used a food marker but I think any thin tipped permanent marker would work great!

That's it!

You can give these to kids and have them simply break the rocks open to reveal the treasures hidden inside

OR you can give kids vinegar and let them get the treasures by using a bit of "magic"

The magical excavation is the most fun of course.  Just make sure you use tightly wrapped candy or fun tricks like spider rings.  Vinegar candy would not be a fun treat.
